About Freaky Frights on Forest

Freaky Frights On Forest, located at the 2200-2400 blocks of Forest Avenue in North Riverside, Illinois, includes animated props, spooky sound effects, creepy lighting, classic monsters, fog filled graveyards, multi media projection, original props and more. This is done with the help and assistance of friends, family, gracious neighbors and now local sponsors who all have a love for the spooky holiday and enjoyment from others.

FFOF’s main focus is for the many children that live in and around the western suburbs. Many relocated from the inner city public housing communities, others from the working class. FFOF puts this all on for free. There are many Halloween events in the Chicagoland area, but none for free, or at this scale. FFOF does this purely for the thrill and enjoyment of others. This can be an expensive night of entertainment for some, especially for large families with 4 or more children. With the average cost of a haunted attraction being between $15-$20 dollars it can add up fast.

FFOF has been around officially since 2003. Before that, it was in other forms including separate locations across Illinois for decades before. In 2003, two frightening forces joined together to form Freaky Frights On Forest.

Planning for FFOF is an all year round event starting with attending conventions, ordering the goods, planning the event and more. The actual Halloween setup production begins in mid summer, beginning with the building of props and set scenes so they can be ready in time for the first week of October. The street and home set ups start the first weekend of October each year. The final production is usually up and running 100% by the second weekend of October and lasts till the first weekend of November.

Some of the events highlights include, a giant spider web screen projecting classic horror movies (a different movie each night), a full size animated scarecrow scene, caskets and coffins filled with animated and re-animated life forms, 7 foot tall erupting volcano scene, classic horror creatures like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, newer monsters like Freddy, Jason and Killer Clowns from Outer Space. Even more unique to the attraction is the over two-dozen custom made creatures and exhibits. We’ll save those surprises for your personal visit.

Thousands of people from across the Chicagoland area visit each year. Every year gets greater that the last. “We’ve even met people from as far as Iowa, Wisconsin and Indiana” - Jim.

FFOF operates by support from people and places in and around the Chicagoland area with donations in one form or another. This comes from not just monetary support but, labor, equipment, candy, materials and time and devotion to seeing excitement on the face of Horror fan’s young or old! If not for this, FFOF could not exist. Thanks to all that make this possible.

The days of operation are generally from the first weekend in October through the first weekend in November. This attraction is most definitely a night attraction. Usually starting up everything around dusk and keep it on till around 10 or 11 PM. Weekends are longer and depend on the flow of traffic. As most people know about Chicago weather, it can change within a moments notice. Since FFOF is an entirely outdoor attraction they may be closed if extreme winds and or rains hit. “The weather has not been very kind to us in past years, we’ve lost many things to Mother Nature’s own horror”- Mark.

FFOF is designed with children ages 5 and up, but beware. There are some horror themed sights that may be too scary for even 50 year olds!

FFOF is not responsible for accidents of any kind. Please enter at your own risk. We also ask that you please do not touch or take any living or dead creatures or props. We want others to enjoy Freaky Frights On Forests for years to come.

So come by and check us out. If you see any of us out working on stuff, come up and say hi. We’d love to hear from you. After all, this is for you.

100% of all donations and support go the operation and construction costs needed each year to make this event possible. This includes building supplies and materials, props and animation, utilities, general supplies, candy, general upkeep, and related items. Labor and time dedication are free.
